Dr. Fiona Macdonald (she/they), Assistant Professor at UNBC Prince George, is currently based and teaching on the unceded territory of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation, part of the Dakelh (Carrier) peoples' territory.

Fiona has been including photo voice projects as assignments in both introductory and upper level political science courses over the last six years during her tenure as a faculty member at the University of the Fraser Valley on the unceded lands of the unceded Stó:lō territory of the Semá:th and Mathxwí First Nations.

In introductory courses, students create an image and write a complementary five page reflection informed by course readings of their choice that explains how the image reflects a politics they encounter and experience in their day-to-day lives. This assignment is consistent with Dr. Macdonald’s overarching approach to the first year course that is centred on revealing and investigating how everything is political.

In upper-level seminar courses, students create an image and a shorter two-page narrative informed by course material that reflects their experience(s) with “the politics of multiculturalism, diversity and/or race” and "the politics of gender and/or sexuality” respectively. These assignments are shorter in large part to make the projects shareable in art gallery style exhibits where students and members of the broader community can engage with the projects.

These gallery events have been a part of International Women’s Day events at the the University of Northern British Columbia (co-sponsored by the UNBC Arts Council) and the University of the Fraser Valley, as well as events at Abbotsford City Hall as part of a CityStudio Collaboration on diversity in the community.

Fiona also has a chapter centered around photo voice projects forthcoming in Feministing in Political Science: A Manifesta for Change entitled “Photo Voice as Feminist Pedagogy: Part I” - contact Fiona Macdonald for more information.

This Community through Care web presence, made possible by a SSHRC Institutional Grant awarded by UNBC in 2021, is a place for these projects to be made available in an online gallery format as well as to share research and resources about the photo voice.
